 SECRETARY’S NOTES

 Inclement Weather

 I hope that this winter will be milder than the one we all experienced last year. But, just in case it isn’t I think it might be an appropriate time to bring to your attention our plan to inform you should we consider it necessary to cancel the Thursday meeting because of adverse weather.

  • For those members without access to the internet a committee member will telephone you to advise you of the decision to cancel the meeting;
  • For those members with access to the internet I will send an email message to advise you of the decision to cancel the meeting;
  • In addition the decision to cancel will be posted on the Brecon U3A website www.breconu3a.org.uk
  • I f you do not receive a message but you are not sure what to do the advice is ‘if in doubt don’t set out’; your safety and well being is crucial.

 =I hope that by sending this message before winter sets in it will be the equivalent ‘insurance’ to taking an umbrella when going out for the day ~ that it simply won’t be needed!

FALLS CLINIC

Dr Pinhorn highlighted the Falls Clinic during her talk on Osteoporosis on Thursday 10th November.

If you or someone you know has suffered with unexplained falls in the last 12 months or if there is a fear of falling then you should speak to your/their surgery nurse or your/their GP.

Alternatively it is possible to telephone the Brecon Falls Clinic for an assessment.

Lise Chesters, Falls Nurse, Brecon Falls Clinic is held at Brecon Hospital, Telephone: 01874 676425

THE RED CROSS NEEDS YOUR HELP

The British Red Cross are committed to helping vulnerable people in crisis.

We are currently working in Powys to find people disadvantaged mainly by health issues or by isolation, and to offer them information and support. We can also offer the supply or loan of daily living equipment, and carry out fire safety checks on their home.

This service is delivered by outreach workers from a purpose built van either at local facilities, or at the person’s own home.

However, as you can imagine, it is not easy to find such individuals, especially given the size and rural nature of Powys, and the fiercely independent character of many of the people living here. So we need your help to make contact.

Do you know anybody who may have fallen through the “safety net”? Would they be willing to talk to a Red Cross worker to see whether we are able to offer any help?

If so please contact outreach workers Andrew Marshall or Jan Hurst, at the Brecon Red Cross office, on 01874 610462, or come and chat to us at the U3A meetings on ……. when we will also be providing more information about the service.

Interested in Chess?

Why not join the newly formed Group ‘U3A National Chess by email’?

All you need to do is set up your own chess board and play by sending and receiving moves by email.

The advantages of playing in this way are:

  • You’ll have as much time as you wish to think about your next move, thereby improving the quality of your moves;
  • Via a grading system, you’ll play someone of equal strength;
  • You can play at any time to suit yourself;
  • You only have to concentrate for the time span of your next move;
  • You’ll play with someone who shares your U3A philosophy of having fun, whilst doing your best without being competitive. A game would be expected take two to three weeks to complete.

‘I find the system works well. I am a strong player and am playing a strong player’ Howard Morley, Barnet U3A.

‘I have immensely enjoyed the game, with the time lapses between moves removing all pressure.’ Irene Augustine Ashton, Macclesfield U3A.

It operates via a page on the U3A National Website (www.u3a.org.uk) and holds the following information from you: name, grade, U3A, short chess profile and email address.

For full information, including how you might decide on your grade, email Dick Chapman, of Watford U3A at dick.chapman@ntlworld.com

U3A Involvement in the Media

Over the past couple of years the Third Age Trust has been courting the media to raise the profile of the University of the Third Age with the general public. Many members were pleased to see U3A featured in a recent episode of ‘New Tricks‘. Archer aficionados are aware that U3A is being woven into life in Ambridge.

Months ago we heard that Peggy Woolley’s new friend, Ted who she met at The Laurels, was a member of U3A. Ted’s hobby is art and he has given a lecture to his U3A branch on the Victorian artist Richard Dadd. Furthermore, he has encouraged Peggy to attend U3A meetings and introduced her to a new skill enamelling which enabled her to win first prize in the 2011 Ambridge Flower and Produce Show. U3A membership for Peggy has been a lifeline; something that many of us may have found.

The actress, June Spencer, who plays Peggy revealed on an edition of ‘Desert Island Discs’ that she is in fact an active member of U3A and belongs to a SIG studying Spanish.

In recent weeks we have discovered that another Ambridge resident Jim Lloyd, a retired history professor from Stirling University, is also a member of U3A. He too gives lectures at his local branch which is no doubt based in Borchester.

For those of us who happen to be Archer addicts there is much fun in trying to predict future plot developments. I have been wondering whether Christine Barford will be lured by Jim into joining U3A. If Chris enrols will Jill Archer soon be joining too …?

Can any Brecon U3A member predict the next radio or television programme that U3A might be woven into?
